the journey
about
the journey (otherwise known as ‘the journey band’) is the onsite worship band at the journey - contemporary worship at memorial drive united methodist church. i worked at the journey as their live and broadcast sound engineer from 2017-2021, eventually leaving to pursue different work and get back to sleeping in late on sunday mornings.
i made so many good friends working here as well as several great connections in the music industry. so, i’m extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work there. noah elkins, coy, ball.ard, meagan jaynes, and matty why are just a few names in a long list of extremely talented and amazing artists i met and later on collaborated with.
during the pandemic, sunday worship services were no longer being held on a regular basis due to social distancing, so the directors and band at the church came up with a solution to pre-record the services to then be shared on their website and social media for members of the church to watch safely from their homes.
this project was a huge undertaking and very exciting for me, as i was always more of an “in the studio/post-production” type of engineer as opposed to a live sound engineer. it gave me the opportunity to take time and ensure the recording and mixing quality of the music was as top-notch as i could possibly get it. the church gave me a ton of creative freedom to ensure that the end product sounded as good as it could.
we would record several songs every so often, which gave me ample time to go back to my home studio and edit, mix, and master them. we wound up compiling a fairly large catalogue of recordings over the span of the quarantine, and it was one of the most hands-on and large-scale projects i’d been a part of to date.
below you’ll find a select list of recordings from that project. it was a fun challenge keeping the sound consistent as the band often cycled out musicians and equipment based on who was available that sunday. so, the sound and style of the band was everchanging, which kept me on my toes the whole time. i learned a lot during this project, and was happy that i was able to offer my services during such uncertain times.
