matty why
about
matty why is a solo project from singer/songwriter matt yalcin, slinging pop hits out of houston, texas. matt was hired to fill in on keys for a worship service at the church i ran live sound at. we made our acquaintance backstage between services, introduced ourselves and started chatting music.
we connected on social media and not too long after that he reached out to me about helping him produce his music he’d been working on. i happily obliged and he started sending me demos of the songs he had already put together. we scheduled some time for him to come into the studio and started professional recording his parts and getting to work on producing the music.
he’s a very kind, charismatic person and i had a great time collaborating with him. his music was a blast to work on as every song had that “radio hit” quality to it. he takes a lot of influences from pop-punk bands of the early 2000s like fall out boy and panic! at the disco, but his music never seemed to pigeonhole itself into one specific genre. because of that, we were able to do whatever we wanted stylistically which opened up a lot of doors.

bird with a broken wing was a collection of all the songs matt and i worked on together over the course of a year or so. the album goes so many places sonically and every song is wildly different than the last, which made working on it a great experience.
i’m naturally somewhat of a “pop music guy”, so matt’s music was right up my alley and there wasn’t much guesswork involved in what needed to be done to it. what i liked about his style is that it incorporated a lot of different styles into specific songs throughout the record, so nothing ever felt stale.
all in all, it was a party to work on this record with matt. and it did very well with his crowd after it was released since his music is so accessible.
