coy

about

coy is a progressive rock band from sugar land, texas—brandon martinez + nuno rodriguez on guitars, kamron conover on bass, aaron nichols on drums, and javier neveu + lexy alameda on vocals.

i first met brandon martinez back in 2018 after connecting with him at a church i worked live sound at. he was hired to come in and perform in the worship band for a few services, and we quickly hit it off. after talking for awhile, i mentioned i produced music and shared some past work. we wound up scheduling a day to get his band into the studio at the beginning of 2020.

fast forward to 2023 — the 3 years prior were spent nitpicking these songs to no end. every time we thought we were at a good spot with them, we came up with ways they could sound better. after several full re-recordings of the entire album, we felt we finally had reached what we were after. and our work paid off in dividends.

albeit a lengthy process, working on this album with coy was beyond enjoyable. i loved chopping it up with them in the studio and getting to know them as they’re all very witty and charming people. they’re continuing to gain traction as time goes on and have put out some new music since.

releases

as mentioned above, god tiger was coy’s first full-length release, and i’m very grateful i got to play a part in it. it was an arduous process and taught me a lot about optimizing my workflow and making vital decisions early on in the creative process before jumping the gun into production. but, with that said, it was a great journey and i enjoyed every second of it. the band had such a great attitude and outlook, and being around them made what would otherwise feel like a chore feel like a celebration.

the record itself is extremely technical, and very impressive if you’re at all music theory savvy. i love their mix of jazzy harmonies, funky and tropical rhythms, R&B/neo-soul motifs, and niche math-rock qualities. it truly defines what it means to be a “progressive rock” group, and they knocked it out of the park.

each member of the band is extremely good at what they do and possesses a great personality to back it up, which goes a long way in this industry. they’ve since released new music to follow up this record which is all just as strong as god tiger, if not better.

i had a great time getting to know all of them and consider myself lucky to have been a part of their growth.
